A couple of weeks ago we toured the old Lorain assembly plant where they put together the Ford Econoline vans. An impressive, vast facility which was essentially shuttered and left to a third party whose job it is to sell off anything and everything for pennies on the dollar. It was eerie and cold and looked like they simply shut off the lights and locked the doors.
Giant locker rooms like this one dot the perimeter of the plant which, in its prime hosted 5,000 workers. This was one of the only rooms which had any light, the interior of the building is pitch black except for a few areas where crews are busy tearing out old equipment or the odd spot light floats like a sad star in a sea of flaking steel and yellow safety paint.
There used to be hundreds of these all around the plant, not surprising, what with the high style, that this was the only one we saw.
This was a bank of Kuka robotic welders, unceremoniously decommissioned and covered in plastic.
Controllers for the robots weep the high pitched wail of technology past, with wires carrying complex signals to nowhere.

Spooky and cool! What were you guys looking for?
ReplyDeleteWe were looking for boom cranes and "smog hog" ventilation units for our plant. A plant supervisor who used to work at the Lorain plant now works for us, he was our unofficial guide.
ReplyDeleteThese are really cool pictures. I like the last one the best.
ReplyDeleteI thought you were in my basement.
